According to some sources the xD-Picture (eXtreme Digital) cards of type M+ utilise MLC (multi-level cell) technology that allow to store more than one bit in a single cell. It also known that these cards released without built-in memory controller to reduce final cost. This makes available use of the xD-Picture card as a NAND array of multi-valued memory cells for ternary machines. Researchers have to build their own binary-to-ternary memory controller (since the card has plain binary interface) equipped with fast on-board ternary buffer (to reduce NAND-write limitations, about 10000 write cycles as far as I know) and use it along with the xD-Picture cards.

Basically "no memory controller" means no circuit to do wear leveling, but all other things as buffers, address demuxers, command decoder etc are there. It is simply NAND flash chip in plastic with pins collected on one side, so it is binary device, not analog device.

P.S. I was looking at a few patents describing technology to store analog values to NAND cells, but I don't think it's applicable to xD cards...

Yes, sure. According to card's pinout there should be some binary logic to address and read-write data in the array. This why I wrote about binary-to-ternary controller.
