Well then I guess they do sell for individuals. Only issue now is getting the money for it. Maybe we can create some kind of money jar via pay-pal or something that we can all contribute to? Might not be enough right away, but it could be enough later down the road? If not then getting investors would be another way.

If we can come up with some kind of list of the pro's and con's of ternary. Then I can take that to some IT conventions to see if I can raise some interest for investments. Probably a long shot, but I've heard dumber things talked about in most IT conventions.

OpenRISC failed to collect enough money to go ASIC:
http://opencores.org/donation
So I think ternary IC design will not collect money at all...

Then that leaves investors, so like I said if we can come up with some kind of list of the pro's and con's to show investors to see if we can get their interest.

Lets say I find someone willing to give us money for this "dream chip". How would this all be handled logistically? Like where do all the parts get shipped to and what do we plan to do with it once it's finished?

If the chip will be suitable to be used as central part of calculator (at least), I'd like to start production of such a calculators for geeks. We can have production separately for Europe and for USA, so we'll need to send ICs within USA and to Europe.

First of all initial three iterations with mosis will be just research and development - not actual production. So logistically it will be shipped to me (New York State) for testing. I can provide a number of "dream chips" to other testers (located in US and/or Europe). Probably that "someone" may want us to share some future profit when "dream chip" will be in production stage - it's OK, but I'm afraid lawyers have to be involved since start and LLC must be incorporated in Delaware or Nevada before we do any expensive actions. Also I don't want "someone" to have exclusive rights on any intellectual property that will be born here - everything must be "open source"...

Actually, that's not a bad idea. I know a lot of companies who might be interested in at least seeing some kind of ternary based chip for proof of concept. They'd pay the LLC to conduct research into ternary systems, and should our research return something notable they would probably start research of their own.

I've got a long list of CTO's, business owners, and network administrators who I can use to conduct survey's on how curious they would be to see any research proving the benefits of a ternary based machine. Once that happens I can take that research and bring it to some other associates of mine to try and get us some investors.

As far as lawyers are concerned I couldn't agree more, but considering the possibility that some people involved may be living in another country. I think this may be difficult. Because they'd need a lawyer who knows the laws of both the US and what ever country they are from.

As far as open sourcing goes I couldn't agree more. We won't get very far keeping this research to our selves. If anything the more people aware of this "dream chip" the better.

Anyways, like I said a few posts back this only happens if we can get a list of pro's and cons going for ternary. Along with a list of "possible" innovations that ternary could lead to.

I think a software implementation must be created first and may be a hardware prototype in FPGA or on TRIMUXes also...

Okay, well an idea I had for a software implementation would be something like Teredo tunneling that converts binary based IPV6 or IPV4 headers into a ternary based header. This would pave the way for ternary based machines to communicate with binary machines.

From my point of view we do not have convert any binary formats to ternary representation as far as it can be easily mapped to 0s and +1s of balanced ternary. Only thing we need for it - wide enough registers and memory cells (e.g. 9 trits).

Well for ordinary computers yes, but for things like NAT's something like teredo would be needed.

Could something like http://www.kickstarter.com/ help us find money to create the chip?
